Pit Bulls - Puppies - History
The term Pit Bull is a name that has incorrectly been given to a number of breeds. This name came historically from a group of fighting dogs made to fight in pits. Large and strong Mastiffs were crossed with active and quick terriers. This cross resulted in the development of fighting dogs that were mentioned by Caesar himself around 55 BC. Fighting dogs were developed in ancient Rome and China. These dogs were pitted against each other, against bears and bulls and had to fight. This was and unfortunately sometimes is a very spectacular sport popular for its brutality and excitement. Pit Bulls - Puppies - Dog Fighting
Pit Bulls are often described as either the guilty party or victims when it comes to bull baiting and dog fighting. Dog fighting came to replace bull baiting when the latter was outlawed in the 1800s.
Many US states banned dog fighting. This sport remains illegal and vicious nowadays. If a dog is bred specially for a fighting pit, specific preparations start from the very beginning of its life. A very strict system is imposed to make them tough and aggressive. Starvation, unreasonable exhausting exercises, and even beating are applied to enrage Pit Bulls and get the desired effect and performance. Trainers bait Pit Bulls with small animals and puppies in order to force and enhance cruelty in these dogs. During the fights, dogs are hit and often forced to fight with severe injuries.
This sport is inhumane. Pit Bulls bred to fight may turn dangerous and aggressive in other situations. Responsible breeding makes Pit Bulls excellent companion dogs that are affectionate and fun to be with.
