Pit Bulls are great dogs. There is no need to promote them, as they are popular all over the world. However, it is rather sad that they are rather notoriously popular. Pit Bulls are banned in many countries and whenever you hear about a dog attacking people you immediately associate the dog with the Pit Bull. Pit Bull breeds are sometimes seen as fierce and cruel creatures, and unpredictably dangerous. If you have chosen one of the Pit Bull breeds as your future family pet, you and your dog might need to conquer common opinion and prove that this breed is not worse than others.
It is both simple and difficult to choose the right puppy. Some irresponsible breeders are only after profit and the litter of puppies is merely a source of money for them. They are not knowledgeable enough to give you an idea of how different the Pit Bull breeds are, how to raise the puppy you need and if the pup is healthy. They are unlikely to be willing to keep track of the puppy they sell.
Check if the Pit Bull pup is registered with the Kennel Club, and if it has a pedigree. A breeder who has not studied the background of the sire and the dam and doesn't have an insight of the importance of a breeding program is not producing high quality puppies.
Visiting shows and trials, you acquire a better idea of what kind of a dog you need and for what purposes. It is wise to choose parents of your future puppy. Once some dog attracts you, ask its owner whether he plans breeding. If you don't intend to show the dog and only need a faithful friend and a nice family pet, you may allow yourself to be less demanding. Remember that Pit Bulls are a very special breed and in any case, you will have to deal with a hyperactive puppy with instincts of a fighting dog. However, with proper training and care most Pit Bulls make wonderful family friends.
